Enjoy selected excerpts from Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s PBS special, THE BLACK CHURCH, as well as a classic ETV documentary, BORN TO REBEL, DRIVEN TO EXCEL, about South Carolina’s own Benjamin Mays. Both a Baptist minister and an educator, Dr. Mays was a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Bobby Donaldson, Assoicate Professor at the University of South Carolina will unpack the connections between Dr. May's life and influence on the Black Church. This event will be held on OVEE.
ABOUT THE BLACK CHURCH: About THE BLACK CHURCH: Premiering later this month, The BLACK CHURCH: THIS IS OUR STORY, THIS IS OUR SONG reveals the broad history and culture of a living institution in African- American life: the Black church. From enslavement to emancipation, the civil rights struggle to political action at every level of society, explore how African- American faith communities have forged interracial ties and have been on the frontline of uplift and change. The four-hour series airs in two-parts on February 16th and 23rd at 9PM on SCETV.
ABOUT BORN TO REBEL DRIVEN TO EXCEL: In this film biography of South Carolinian Dr. Benjamin Mays, Andrew Young says it this way: “If there hadn’t been a Benjamin Mays, there wouldn’t have been a Martin Luther King, Jr.” The legacy of this South Carolina native is explored in the film, produced for Carolina Stories.
ABOUT DR. BOBBY DONALDSON-Dr. Bobby Donaldson serves as an Associate Professor of History and the Director of the Center for Civil Rights History and Research at the University of South Carolina-Columbia. He received his undergraduate degree in History and African American Studies from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT and his Ph.D. in American History from Emory University. Professor Donaldson’s teaching and scholarship examine southern history and African American life and culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Presently, he serves as the lead scholar and director for the Columbia SC 63, a documentary project that examines the struggle for civil rights and social justice in Columbia and around the state of South Carolina.
